The 67’s won all three of their games this past weekend to extend their ongoing win streak to five. The weekend slate included a home-and-home sweep of the Oshawa Generals.
Friday night’s matchup in Oshawa was a high-scoring affair between the two clubs. They combined for 15 goals scored and 69 shots on net. The 67’s won 9-6 by putting forth two dominant periods.
Ottawa scored eight of their nine goals between the first and second periods, while receiving significant contributions from their newest forwards. Both Kyle Maksimovich and Lucas Chiodo finished with four points. Maksimovich scored his first hat trick as a 67 and Chiodo assisted on all three of his goals, including one on the power play.
They weren’t the only 67’s to fill up the stat sheet however. Nine Ottawa skaters tallied at least two points and Michael DiPietro was in net for the win.
Despite the defeat, Oshawa was deadly on the man advantage. They went 4/7 on the power play on Friday, an incredible amount of both PP opportunities and goals.
Cedrick Andree was tapped to start the following evening against the Generals and he put on perhaps his most impressive showing of the season. Andree stopped 38 shots to capture his third shutout victory of the 2018-19 campaign.
Tye Felhaber opened the scoring in the first period on the power play, finding the net for his 50th goal of the season. The sniper’s breakout season continues. He could surpass 60 by the end of the regular season schedule. Merrick Rippon, Marco Rossi and Graeme Clark also scored. Both Rossi and Felhaber scored in all three of the weekend’s games.
The Generals were not nearly as deadly on the power play as they were the night prior. They still received six opportunities but were unable to capitalize on any of them and were held off the scoreboard entirely.
It took more of a 60-minute effort to escape with a win on Sunday afternoon however. The 67’s topped the Saginaw Spirit 5-3 at TD Place Arena but had to survive a wild six-goal third period.
Four of those six goals in the third came from Ottawa, including two in under a minute from Rossi and Mitchel Hoelscher. After the five unanswered scored by the 67’s, the Spirit were able to pot two but could not draw closer than that. The second frame was relatively quiet, but Chiodo and Saginaw’s Damien Giroux both scored in a very even first period between the two teams. Cedrick Andree picked up the win in yet another successful start.
The Spirit were able to keep it close for the majority of the game but the top-ranked Ottawa offense can only be held down for so long. Once they find their footing, they are consistently overwhelming for most opponents.
The 67’s are home this week to take on the Kingston Frontenacs (Wednesday), Guelph Storm (Friday) and Niagara IceDogs (Saturday).
