Amen Jafri’s So I Married Myself short doc should and will spark conversation.

When you think of marriage, what comes to mind? Commitment? A lifelong bond between two people? But what about one person? Self-marriage or sologamy is becoming increasingly popular. It is the process of marrying oneself. Now, the reaction has been somewhat polarizing as some declare it an opportunity to commit to yourself while others write it off as ‘weird.’

Regardless of how you feel, it does spark a conversation, and for filmmaker Amen Jafri it was the impetus for her latest film.

So I Married Myself is a documentary that explores sologamy from all angles. From a filmmaking perspective, this documentary is very well made. From the score to the editing, not to mention the very comprehensive research Jafri has assembled to discuss this topic, she brings in people on both sides of the argument to foster a healthy discussion. After seeing this film, one cannot help but feel more educated on the subject.

Regarding the subject matter itself, Jafri brings to light something that has been growing in popularity over the last decade. I don’t know who gets to sit on the throne and decide what is ‘weird’ for someone else, but it’s a very interesting concept that seems to reinvigorate a person's confidence and overall happiness.

As a filmmaker, Jafri should be proud of her accomplishment. I recently had the opportunity to sit down with her and discuss the film.
