Conserving Art With the Right Frame in Mind: Patrick Gordon Framing
For over 20 years, Patrick Gordon has turned his side hustle and passion for framing into one of the most trusted and reputable framing studios in Ottawa. Located close to City Centre, Patrick Gordon Framing Studio provides exceptional and attentive art framing, conservation, and shipping services for artists, galleries, and art-lovers across the city.
The studio boasts a collection of frames locally sourced from the regions around the Greater Toronto Area, featuring products made with acid-free materials.
While he first opened in 2004 to primarily ship and install art, Gordon says that his love for framing slowly began to take over.
“We work in almost every aspect within the arts community—we’ve got photo and painting conservators. And we focus mainly on working with artists to give them better deals because I know that picture framing can be quite expensive.”
His studio near City Centre was a prime location choice due to affordability, but Gordon has also recognized the recent increase in traffic thanks to restaurants and other shops, as well as the new high-rise buildings within the area.
Along with Gordon, there is a dedicated team of framers, most of them graduates or students from art programs, providing them with mentorship relevant to their studies.
“Everybody has a very good understanding. We can’t really afford to be damaging art,” he said.
Patrick Gordon Framing has earned a name for itself within the Ottawa art community for its attention to detail and customer service from its experienced staff. Gordon states that he’s never had a customer walk away unhappy, and that his team is quick to rectify any issues that a customer may come across. Keeping customers satisfied with the finished art product is what keeps the business going.
Gordon and his team of artists all enjoy what they do, but they especially look forward to the types of pieces they may come across to help restore or frame.
“There’s something new to look forward to every day. You never know what’s going to come through the door. We’ve framed lots of well-known artists—Dali, Picasso, Group of Seven . . . But I’d say 99 percent of the work that comes through the door are original works of art.”
The studio frequently hosts art unveilings, such as Ottawa-based artist Claude Latour’s Makwa’s Hibernation series, and collaborates with various galleries across the city.
Patrick Gordon Framing Studio is located at 160 Elm Street and is open from Monday to Saturday.
