ASK ALEX: Trend Report

Q: What three items should I add to my wardrobe this season?

A: Be bright, be bold and stand out in the cold! Invest in some quality winter accessories that will make a fashion statement and function to keep you cozy. Modern updates can make over an entire look and accessories are a budget-friendly alternative to purchasing pricey separates. Leopard print accessories, whether it be leopard print scarves or shoes, are a trend that isn’t going away any time soon.

Fall in love with Winter Glebe Girl

Chunky warm knits were all over the fall/winter runways featuring detailed patterns at Derek Lam, matching scarf and sweater combinations at Mark Fast and thick turtleneck knits paired with sheer sequin skirts at Michael Kors. Oversized cables put a twist on the classic knit and are the perfect way to stay warm this winter.

STUDDED LEATHER GLOVES As seen on the Burberry runway, studded leather gloves provide subtle style substance to any ensemble. Available at Holt Renfrew

LEOPARD PRINT – Leopard is the new black. Leopard ballet flats, for example, go with everything because they basically function as a classic pair of black shoes. Fashion is about trying something new. Printed Booties $59.99 at Winners

GO BOLD WITH A BRIGHT COAT – Make a statement in a bright- coloured jacket. Ditch your tired black winter coat and put on something that will make you smile! Purple jacket $129 at H & M

Get tough with a touch of leather. Still the ‘it’ fabric for winter and its reach has extended beyond coats and jackets into the realm of dresses and shirts. Head to toe leather appeared on the Ferragamo runway, full leather skirts appeared in the Calvin Klein collection and Rag & Bone incorporated stripes of leather throughout. To keep the look appropriate for work, opt for separates or minimal amounts of leather to avoid looking too hard-edged.
