Be Transported to the Tropics this Weekend at the Carleton Butterfly Show
Fall can be a difficult time for any Ottawanian. As we say farewell to hot humid days and hello to crisp mornings, some of us would do anything to hold onto one last moment of summer.
Well, you’re in luck! Now until Sunday you can still experience tropical weather and see over 1300 live exotic butterflies at the Carleton University Biology Department’s annual Carleton Butterfly Show.
For over 15 years the Nesbitt Biology Department has welcomed upwards of 10,000 people annually to walk through its greenhouse and interact with these beautiful creatures.
This family friendly event is not only free, but also educational, mesmerizing, and very, very popular. When you arrive, you should expect to wait in line for at least 20 minutes, so if you have young children in your party, arrive early and bring snacks.
However, the wait is worth it.
When you enter the greenhouse, both young and old will be amazed. There are butterflies everywhere! Representing 41 different butterfly species from across the world, the colours and patterns you encounter are simply amazing.
If you have a hard time seeing the butterflies throughout the lush fauna, all you need to do is look up to see them fluttering in every direction.
This exhibit is fully interactive so you are encouraged to wear bright colours, arm your camera, and bring orange and pineapple slices from home to attract as many butterflies to you as possible.
While not everyone seemed to be a butterfly whisperer, those that were happily shared the wealth and passed around occupied orange slices for closer inspection.
If you are looking for starting an annual tradition this Thanksgiving, pack up the kids and your camera and spend some time at the Carleton Butterfly Show.
