Canada Welcomes the 2013 International Triathlon Union Duathlon World Championships
By Hank Rearden
Athletes from across the globe are set to gather in Ottawa to participate in the 2013 ITU (International Triathlon Union) Duathlon World Championships running from August 8 to 10. Qualified men and women from 40 countries will lace up to compete in the Elite U23, Elite Junior, Age Group (18-70+) and Paraduathlon races for the World Championships, as a part of the World Games.
The ITU Duathlon World Championship course has a standard (10km run, 40km cycle, 5km run) and sprint (5km run, 20km cycle, 2.5km run) distance during which participants will experience a one-of-a-kind urban course. Starting at the Canadian War Museum and moving down the Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway along the Ottawa River, competitors will enjoy the picturesque views and city landmarks.
“It is exciting to see Ottawa open its doors to such a great competition like the ITU Duathlon World Championship,” says Norm O’Reilly, Race Chair. “This course has been specifically planned to showcase the beauty and distinguished urban landscape that Ottawa has to offer, embracing a vibrant ambience with spectators, tourists and local interest. Competitors will be treated to a challenging race, but it will also be a sight for spectators as they can watch the entire race along the Ottawa River.”
In addition to the championship races, ITU has partnered with Ottawa Tourism and TrojanOne Ltd. to create an open sprint distance Duathlon race and an open 5km run available to the general public. The open races will take place on August 10 along the championship course and will allow the public to experience racing on the world-class course.
Qualified athletes can register for ITU Duathlon World Championships through their national federations. Open duathlon and 5km race participants can register before July 15, 2013 to receive a discounted rate of $99 for the Open duathlon and $49 for the 5km run.
