Ottawa wine lovers know that Prince Edward County is close enough to provide an ideal weekend getaway or a leisurely vacation destination. The region offers numerous wineries, great restaurants and spectacular views of Lake Ontario. I recently zeroed in on wines from The Grange of Prince Edward Winery and was delighted to taste three new products from their recent releases in the Estate Wine Series.
The vineyards at the Grange have been undergoing a rejuvenation process since 2021, and the new releases showcase the richly varied terroir of their vineyards. The 2023 Estate Series Cabernet Franc, Gamay, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir are a tribute to the versatility and maturity of these vines and represent several of the grape varietals that grow well in Ontario. I sampled three of their red wines, which complement hearty fall and winter cuisine.
About The Grange of Prince Edward Winery
Established in 2002, The Grange of Prince Edward Winery is a thriving part of Ontario’s vibrant winemaking landscape. It spans 135 acres in Hillier, Ontario, with over 40 acres of vines planted with Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Gamay and Cabernet Franc. The Grange’s plantings represent some of the oldest in the region.
The Grange is also committed to hosting culinary experiences that focus on locally sourced farm-to-table ingredients. During the late fall and winter months, it hosts indoor dining, with a mouthwatering menu. During late spring and summer, you can eat outdoors, where food trucks offer casual dining with local fare.
The Grange hosts weddings, corporate retreats and private events. Their 200-year-old barn, with its 30-foot fieldstone fireplace, has been converted into the winery and events space. It’s situated nestled amongst the vineyards and overlooks quiet fields and gardens. All year round, The Grange is an ideal spot for wine lovers and foodies to indulge their passion!

2023 Estate Pinot Noir shows vibrant notes of cherry and roasted beet, as well as nuances of earthy tea leaf. It’s a lighter-bodied Pinot Noir, with soft tannins and fine balance. Pair it with roast duck or pork tenderloin. At the Grange, Chef Paul serves this flavourful Pinot with a classic fall dish; Duck Confit with white beans and locally sourced greens.

The Grange of Prince Edward Cabernet Franc 2023
Prince Edward County VQA, Ontario
The Northfield block where the vines for this Cabernet Franc grow has a unique microclimate. The vines have a few more growing days than plantings closer to the lake, allowing the grapes to develop richer fruit flavours. This is an outstanding Ontario Cab Franc!
With lots of ripe raspberry on the nose, on the palate you’ll find rich blackberry, raspberry, tart black cherry and savoury roasted red pepper. The excellent acidity and beautiful ripe fruit flavours are typical of County Cab Franc and reflect the farm’s exceptional terroir. Enjoy this Cab Franc with herb-crusted rack of lamb.
