The Golden Globes have taken a different turn in the year 2018, in the best way possible. This year, it was about more than just the Red Carpet or the recipients of the awards – although there were some pretty amazing speeches given. Instead, the spotlight shined on the Time’s Up movement.
What began from a long, deep history of events has accumulated for many years leading up to its explosion in the media last year, with various industry legends revealed for their involvement in sexual harassment within the Hollywood space. In respect to these incidents, stars and others involved in the entertainment industry banded together to sport a black color theme of clothing throughout the event, representing their support for the movement and solidarity with the sexual assault victims that have been and continue to be affected. As a result, the Golden Globes 2018 sparked the beginning of the Time’s Up movement and many are expecting to finally see active change happen.
It may be safe to say that Hollywood has launched the year with a promising start. This year's Golden Globes ceremony was different in the sense that unity was portrayed among prominent, impactful figures for an issue feared by many, which does not happen as often as it should. In other words, fame was used for a good cause. Celebrities like Jennifer Lawrence and Reese Witherspoon strongly advocate the movement and are just two of the three-hundred in the television industry. Along with other supporters from around the globe, the Time’s Up movement won’t go away anytime soon.
Some key moments from the night include:
- Oprah’s accomplishment and acceptance speech
It was a special moment to see Oprah walk up the stage to receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award, presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment”. No description can truly capture Oprah’s impact on not only the media, but the hearts of real people with real issues. It is expected that Oprah’s words of wisdom will always amaze, but her acceptance speech was truthfully the winner of the night.
- A visual representation of solidarity – the “black-dress blackout”
Fashion was used as an influential means to come together and show that such important problems will no longer linger in the dark and that things must change from here on out. Stars that most definitely stood out included Millie Bobby Brown, Claire Foy & Matt Smith and Tracee Ellis Ross.
Millie Bobby Brown: Sweet and elegant, her outfit showed just that. Millie wore a mini silk black dress with a unique front to back ruffle display. You simply can’t take your eyes off of her mesmerizing dress!
Claire Foy & Matt Smith: The couple grabbed everyone’s attention by taking on a bold choice in wearing black suits. Pant suits have never looked this good; Claire made it work in all its simplicity and fierceness. Will this be a trend for 2018?
Tracee Ellis Ross: Tracee’s look was beautiful and sophisticated. The choice in wearing a black turban totally completed the look and more importantly, sent a strong and meaningful message to everyone about how the campaign meant a lot to her.
Undoubtedly, the Golden Globes 2018 will be an unforgettable milestone in pop culture history. It is a lesson that tells us that no one has a perfect life despite how glorious the status or reputation. We can either let problems destroy or empower us.
It is imperative that we continue to show support and be aware of what really goes on in the world. We have seen miraculous stories of what happens when people come together in order to inspire change and do change; the Golden Globes is certainly going to one of them.
