J & J’s Gibberish: Thor v Justice League
One mother's weekly journey in raising her special needs children.
Jennifer: Two hero movies are in the theatre right now. Thor Ragnorak and Justice League. Jacob decided to review both. Over to him.
Hi. It’s me Jacob. I have to be honest and tell you that I love superhero movies, the genre I mean. Or example, like, my sister loves horror movies, my mom likes those romance ones and I love superhero ones. You might think that disqualifies me to review these movies but I think it makes me a better critic of them because I know what is good and what is bad.
First on Thor. The plot is fantastic, although it is a bit simple, but that’s ok. Basically Odin (Thor’s dad) dies, evil Hela the firstborn comes back to claim the throne and all heck breaks out. There are other evil characters along the way (the tyrant Grandmaster who is like an ancient Roman leader in a way because he has gladiator-type events in a Colosseum, but he is also really funny). Thor gets imprisoned by the Grandmaster but he meets Hulk there oddly enough (which is a bit of a stretch but go with it. It works.) Loki is in the movie and is his usual self, (or maybe not? You have to see the movie) and as I saidHulk is in the movie. There are twists and turns with the addition of Valkyrie (as Asgardian by birth) who is a bit of a bad one at first but she comes around. They all go back to kick the crap out of Hela but I won’t spoil the rest. It is an action-packed movie with lots of action to keep you on the seat of your chair the entire time.
The acting is really great on every front. My mom loved Cate Blanchett at Hela and she plays a good evil character. You might think that the dialogue in a movie like this wouldn’t be clever, but it is in Thor. It is really good actually. There is humour, there is sarcasm and lots of what my mom called witty moments.
The effects are outstanding. I would expect that to be honest and the movie delivers. I give this a 4.5 on 5. It is that good. By the way, you definitely do not need to have seen other Thor movies to get it. It is a stand-alone kind of movie that will entertain everyone.
Justice League was also worth seeing. However, to be honest between the two, Thor is better. I am not going to pit Marvel characters versus DC Comics ones. I am not going there. They are all phenomenal. I mean Justice League has Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and the Flash and yes, Superman. But I won’t scene spoil and I will leave it at that.
The plot is good, (saving earth kind of thing) but to be honest, some of it is far-fetched. Wait, that sound funny doesn’t it but still I am going to say that the Superman stuff seemed a bit much. See it and you will know what I mean.
It is the dialogue though that sets the two movies apart. Thor is way better. The actors in Justice League (Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Henry Cavill, Jason Momoa, Ezra Miller, Ray Fisher, Amy Adams pull it off as best they can, but the quality of dialogue isn’t the same. That is the big difference because the effects are just as outstanding in Justice League. The plot is a bit more simplistic than Thor too but it all holds together. 3.8 on 5.
Here is my suggestion. See Justice League first so you won’t be disappointed, then go see Thor and be blown away.
