If I ask you to mention a versatile and healthy staple, I bet you think of rice.
Why? Because rice can pair almost any other ingredient –vegetables, meat, seafood, nuts–, it can be served as a side dish, as a main course or as a dessert, and it can be eaten during any season of the year.
That’s why rice is always present in different countries' cuisines, no matter how different their cultures are.
Let’s get to the details
There are loads of different ways of preparing rice, as we’ve discussed so far. You may know how to cook the best shrimp salad recipe with rice as one of the main ingredients; you could have made the classic Thai chicken fried rice a couple of times in your life; or you could even prefer to use rice to prepare the classic arroz con leche as a dessert. But today, you are going to learn how to cook a Jasmati rice and beans dish that is going to take your breath out!
Heading off to the kitchen
With its common and flavorful ingredients, this Jasmati rice and beans recipe is going to take you no longer than 30 minutes to be ready.
It is ideal for those who are taking their first steps in the kitchen and are looking for some easy recipe to give their friends a treat. Or, why not, for those who relish cooking and want to pamper themselves for a while with a delicious bite.
- ½ cup of Jasmati rice.
- 3 cups of water.
- A pinch of salt.
- 1 tablespoon of butter.
- ½ cup of red kidney beans.
- ½ cup of black beans.
- 1 cup of yellow onion.
- 1 cup of red or green bell pepper.
- 1 tablespoon of garlic powder.
- 1 teaspoon of oregano.
- 1 teaspoon of cumin.
- 3 roma tomatoes.
- 3 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar.
- 1 tablespoon of hot sauce.
- 8 all white meat turkey franks.
- To begin with, I suggest chopping the onion, the bell pepper and the tomatoes, slicing the turkey franks, and rinsing and draining the beans well before starting to cook. These simple steps are going to help you save a lot of time later on and you will be grateful.
- Then, take a saucepan and add the water with a pinch of salt and the rice. Bring it to a simmer, reduce the heat and let it boil for about 20 minutes.
- Meanwhile, melt the butter in another pan. Add the onion, the bell pepper, the garlic powder, the oregano and the cumin and sauté everything for about 5 minutes.
- After that, add the tomatoes, the beans, the turkey franks, the hot sauce and the apple cider vinegar. Place it over medium-low heat and let it cook for about 5 minutes.
- Finally, add the cooked rice and combine everything well. Enjoy!
- If you aren’t really a fan of spicy food, you can omit using hot sauce.
- However, if you, on the other hand, relish spicy food, it can be a very good choice to add some extra spicy seasoning blend. Yummy!
- Always remember that, if you are a vegetarian, you can replace the turkey franks for your favorite vegetables. Don’t be afraid of being creative! You can add, for example, some eggplants.
