Ottawa Life is looking for new summer team members to be part of our Social Media Street Team, helping us to bring more quality social content to our readers in the areas of Arts/Events, Sports, Health/Wellness, Fashion/Beauty, Business, Food/Wine, Homes/Neighbourhoods and/or Politics. Team members will roam the city on behalf of the magazine, taking pictures and covering things like local events, happenings, locations, arts and culture to publish on the magazine's social media platforms.
Street Team members will have the opportunity to have their photos or work published digitally on the magazine’s social media platforms, visible to a national audience. This is the perfect way to gain real world work experience and to get your foot in the door of the journalism, communications and publishing industries.
Street Team members must complete a minimum of 40 hours over the course of the two-month period of the position (i.e. five hours per week or 20 hours per month), with all posts adhering to the Ottawa Life social media, photography and formatting guidelines. Each team member, and therefore their content, will be focused in a specific neighbourhood of the city according to where they are based. Working hours and deadlines for posts/content can be customized to fit your schedule. We’re looking for candidates who have strong social media skills, a penchant for local culture, and a true interest in digital media.
Duties can/will include creating social media posts for any or all of our three major platforms (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram), engaging with the magazine's followers, photography, pitching social content ideas, writing captions, fact-checking, interviewing and more. Street Team members can volunteer additional hours on top of the required 40 if desired.
The position is remote, but candidates must be able to attend an introductory meeting and to meet in and around the Ottawa area as required. This is a temporary summer position and will run from June 27th until September 1st.
The Ideal Candidate:
- Lives in or around Ottawa
- Is a current high school student
- Must be over 14 years of age
- Has exceptional communication skills
- Has an expertise in using Facebook, Twitter and Instagram
- Possesses broad knowledge/interest in one or more of our various verticals
- Is proficient in photography
- Is organized, detail oriented and self-motivated
- Can work with a remote support system
- Can take direction and meet strict deadlines, often with a quick turnaround time
- Can generate punchy, original social media content ideas
Some previous experience in a related field (writing, social media, photography, communications, etc.) is preferred, but not required. Previous published work clips are an asset.
Note: This is a volunteer position and is unpaid. Street Team members will gain volunteer hours, as well as experience and references. The hours for this position can count towards the mandatory volunteer hours required to complete the Ontario Secondary School Diploma.

Please send a resume and a cover letter specifying why you are interested in the position, what subject areas you are particularly interested in and what area of the city you are based in to Anna Jonas at anna@ottawalife.com.
Deadline for all applications is June 6th.
