Three hundred days of sunlight might seem like a dream, with all this wacky Canadian spring weather, but Place in the Sun has managed to bottle those golden rays.
Here’s something new to sip on this summer—Place in the Sun has a South African Shiraz made with the grapes of the Cape’s prime growing areas. An intense garnet colour with flashes of ruby, this generous-bodied wine has juicy red berry notes with hints of smokiness on the nose, and red fruits melded with pepper flavours on the palate. Gently oaked and matured for 12 months before bottling, it also has a highlight of dreamy wood spices.
This South African brand contributes to social transformation by working with the communities that help with the production of their wines. Recognizing the importance of fair trade, Place in the Sun is Fairtrade certified; they create their wines with the intention of speaking to social upliftment.
Only the finest grapes are sourced from premier winegrowing regions in the Cape Winelands that are certified by FLO-CERT under the Fair Label Organization (FLO) Standards, and the grapes are purchased at a premium rate. These profits go into a farm workers’ trust, and the money is used to build schools, fund training opportunities, and create a vegetable garden for the workers and their families.
Place in the Sun is invested in the integrity of their production, since they are annually monitored by FLO-CERT—it means there is reliability and transparency throughout the winemaking process. Place in the Sun also focuses on empowering and supporting local workers; they believe that when happy people make wine, it leads to a quality and flavour in the finished product that is unrivaled.
The sustainable Fairtrade label on the bottle will tell you that sustainability and justice in production and trade processes are valued by Place in the Sun. So crack open a bottle of their 2012 Shiraz, and enjoy with grilled sirloin or lamb, or blue cheese and dark chocolate. You can sip on this knowing that the wine you chose is doing good things in the world.
Place in the Sun Shiraz is available at the LCBO and retails for $12.95.
