Be Winter Warm with Winter Care at Home
With the coldest temperatures of the year expected in Ontario tonight, it’s important for homeowners to ensure they’re staying safe and warm. Whether you’re skating on the canal, playing shinny on a local rink, taking in Winterlude or skiing, it’s always nice to think about heading home to a warm abode for some post-exercise rest and relaxation.
Dave Gosling, Vice President of Field Operations, at Enercare is reminding everyone that “it’s essential we all take the necessary steps to ensure our homes are prepared for the cold.” He has great advice to make sure that you’re covered. “Enercare, like all Ontarians, is no stranger to the cold. We live and work in your communities and experience the same extreme winter weather. “Luckily, we have our own team of Furnace Whisperers to keep you protected from the deep freeze.”
Here are Dave’s tips for staying warm this weekend!
1. If you’ve experienced a heavy snowfall, it’s important to ensure that the outside furnace vents are clear from any snow buildup which can impact the equipment’s airflow.
2. To avoid frozen water pipes, ensure they are well insulated and are not exposed to temperatures below zero. If they are, make sure to turn off the faucet and drain ahead of the extreme cold.
3. Ensure your furnace is working efficiently by changing or cleaning the furnace air filters frequently – at least twice a heating season. If the airflow is obstructed, the equipment can overheat and cause the furnace to breakdown.
4. If you have a conventional or wood-burning fireplace, don’t use it when the outside temperature is below -7°C (19°F). The cold air coming into your house through the open flue wastes more heat than is gained.
So, cuddle up with your loved ones this Family Day long weekend and enjoy Winterlude and the great Ottawa outdoors. And of course, if you run into any issues, reach out to Enercare!
