Your weekly round-up of sports in Ottawa for March 14-March 20, 2022.

Ottawa 67’s

The 67’s went winless last week, dropping four home games. The week started with a 7-3 loss to the Niagara IceDogs (Mar. 14), where Alex Johnston appeared in his 150th career OHL game. The 67’s were edged out 5-4 by the Kingston Frontenacs on Wednesday night (Mar.16), a game that saw Alex Johnston get his first OHL goal. A pair of low-scoring defeats against the Hamilton Bulldogs wrapped up the week, 3-2 and 3-1 (Mar. 19-20). 2022 NHL draft-eligible Vinzenz Rohrer impressed, scoring five goals in the four games.

The team plays just twice this week, games against the Peterborough Petes (Mar. 25) and Barrie Colts (Mar. 27), to wrap up its seven-game homestand. The 67’s – currently seventh in the Eastern Conference – sit just six points ahead of ninth-place Sudbury in the playoff picture, with the top eight qualifying. Nine games remain in the regular season.

Carleton Ravens

Men’s Basketball advanced to the OUA East division finals with an 87-68 playoff win over the Ryerson Rams (Mar.19). Lloyd Pandi was one assist short of posting a triple-double for the Ravens, finishing with 24 points, ten rebounds, and nine assists. Pandi was named Raven’s Men’s Athlete of the Week. The OUA East finals go on Wednesday (Mar. 23), with Carleton playing host to the Queen’s Gaels.

Women’s Basketball advanced to the OUA East division finals with a 61-58 win over rival University of Ottawa Gee-Gees (Mar.19). A pair of late three-pointers from Teresa Donato and Tatyanna Burke sealed the victory for the Ravens. Burke was named Raven’s women’s athlete of the week after putting up 11 points, seven rebounds, and two steals. The Ravens travel to Toronto to take on the Ryerson Rams in the OUA East finals on Wednesday (Mar. 23).

Men’s Hockey season ended in a 6-1 loss to the UQTR Patriotes in the OUA East quarterfinal on Wednesday (Mar. 16). For head coach Shaun Van Allen, the focus turns to next season. “We’re really going to be on the recruiting train here. We want to have a really deep team this year and add to the pieces we’ve already got,” he told goravens.com.

University of Ottawa Gee-Gees

Men’s Basketball was eliminated from the playoffs in a 59-55 OUA East semi-final loss to Queen’s (Mar. 19). Guillaume Pepin led the Gee-Gees with 19 points while playing a team-high 35 minutes.

Women’s Basketball season ended with a 61-58 loss against Carleton (Mar. 19). Brigitte Lefebvre-Okankwu scored a game-high 17 points.

Men’s Hockey was eliminated from the playoffs following a 4-0 shutout loss to the Nipissing Lakers in their OUA East quarterfinal match (Mar. 16). Despite outshooting Nipissing, the Gee-Gees were stymied by goaltender Michael Herringer who made 28 saves in the victory.

Women’s Hockey was upset by the Bishop’s Gaiters in their RSEQ bronze medal semi-final series, falling 2-1 in the best-of-three series. After a 4-0 loss in game one (Mar. 17), the Gee-Gees travelled to Sherbrooke and pulled off a 4-0 win of their own (Mar. 19) to even the series at one game apiece. Bishop’s took a 3-0 lead in the second period of game three and held on for a 3-2 victory (Mar. 20) to advance to the bronze medal final.
