Sundance 2023: Films to keep an eye out for.
The 2023 Sundance Film Festival runs until January 29th. The Utah-based film festival has debuted some fantastic films over the years, including the recent Academy Award Best Picture winner CODA. Here are the ten films that have caught my attention.
The Accidental Getaway Driver
A ride-share driver reluctantly answers a late-night call for a ride and is taken hostage by men who recently escaped from jail; coupled with the fact that it is produced by the same team behind the James Bond films, it has piqued my interest.
Cat Person
This film is based on a play and stars CODA breakout star Emilia Jones as it looks at modern dating. They had us at CODA.
Eileen
After a strong performance in Last Night in Soho, Thomasin McKenzie is back in Eileen. She plays the main character, a woman with a ho-hum life working in a prison until an intoxicating woman (Anne Hathaway) joins the staff. Hathaway is always fun to watch, and McKenzie is a star on the rise.
Infinity Pool
What must dinner be like at the Cronenberg household? David’s son Brandon brings us his third movie. A couple on vacation finds themselves on the wrong side of the law, and we are introduced to hedonistic tourism. In addition, Mia Goth, who gave great performances in X and Pearl, stars in this.
Judy Blume Forever
In a few months, the film adaptation of Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret will come to theatres, but first, we get a film focussed on Ms. Blume herself. Judy Blume’s literary work has inspired generations, and hopefully, this documentary does her justice.
Magazine Dreams
Is it too early to call 2023 the year of Jonathan Majors? This year he will star in Creed 3, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and this film. No stranger to Sundance, The Last Black Man in San Francisco, Majors returns to star in this film about a man obsessed with bodybuilding.
The Pod Generation
Do you love technology? Who doesn’t? This film may take it to another level. In the not-too-distant future, we are introduced to the world of artificial wombs. Emilia Clarke, Game of Thrones, and Chiwetel Ejoifor, 12 Years a Slave, star as our couple.
Sometimes I think About Dying
Daisey Ridley stars as Fran, a loner who often thinks about dying. Then a new guy starts at the office who catches her attention. This film could go so many different ways, but I'm excited to see Ridley star in something that doesn’t have her carry a lightsaber.
Theatre Camp
I’m not sure what Molly Gordon didn’t do in this movie. She directed it, produced it, and was one of its writers and stars. The film is about a theatre camp that encounters numerous obstacles. Will the show go on? With Ben Platt and Amy Sedaris, no strangers to theatre, along for the ride this should be fun.
You Hurt My Feelings
Julia Louis-Dreyfus plays an author who is getting ready to release a follow-up to her memoir and overhears her husband’s honest critique of it. As her world unravels her husband is dealing with some issues of his own.
