The Great Canadian Theatre Company (GCTC) is set to celebrate a significant milestone with the opening of its 50th Anniversary Season. From September 24 to October 6, 2024, audiences will be treated to a revival of the beloved Canadian comedy The Anger in Ernest and Ernestine, crafted by the talented trio of Robert Morgan, Martha Ross, and Leah Cherniak.
The production, directed by Geoff McBride and starring local talents Maryse Fernandes as Ernestine and Drew Moore as Ernest, dives into the complexities of cohabitation through the lens of humour and heart. The play begins with the couple moving into their first shared home—a cramped basement apartment that comes with its own challenges, not least of which is a large, temperamental furnace. The comedic exploration of love, conflict, and domesticity resonates with anyone who has navigated the often-tumultuous waters of living with a partner, friend, or family member.
“The play is a hoot and a fantastic way to kick off this golden anniversary season,” McBride shares enthusiastically. “It’s packed with comedy, love, heartbreak, hats, and home heating! Rehearsals have been a delight, and I can’t wait for our audience to experience our shenanigans.”
Originally premiered over 35 years ago, The Anger in Ernest and Ernestine has become a Canadian classic, delighting audiences across the country since its debut in 1987. The play’s development was rooted in improvisation, which adds a lively spontaneity that continues to engage viewers.
The production will unfold at GCTC’s Irving Greenberg Theatre Centre, a warm and inviting atmosphere for attendees. The creative team behind this revival includes Emilio Sebastiao on lighting design, Erin Eldershaw as movement choreographer & advisor, and Nick Di Gaetano handling sound design. Stage management will be in the capable hands of Rebecca Miller, while Sarah Waghorn and Vanessa Imeson take charge of set and props design and costume design, respectively.
In the spirit of accessibility, GCTC offers various initiatives to accommodate a wide range of audience needs. This includes a reduced capacity performance on September 27, where attendees can enjoy the show with a bit more space, and masking is required. A “1975 Pricing” initiative will allow patrons to purchase tickets for only $3.50 on September 29, harkening back to the theatre’s early days.
For those seeking a more relaxed environment, the October 1 performance will allow audience members to move freely, stretch, or leave the theatre as needed. Masks are required to be worn at this performance as well. Additionally, an ASL-interpreted performance will take place on October 4, enhancing accessibility for the D/deaf and hard-of-hearing community.
A pre-show discussion on September 25 at 6 p.m. will feature Artistic Director Sarah Kitz in conversation with Director Geoff McBride and Robert Morgan, one of the initial creators of the show, providing an opportunity for audience members to engage directly with the creative minds behind the production. This discussion, held in the GCTC lobby, is free and open to the public.
The official opening night for reviewers is on September 26, with the curtain rising at 8 p.m.
