The Hungarian film ‘Toxicoma’ will be screened at EUFF 2022 on November 24th.

From November 17 to December 3, 2022, the 37th European Film Festival (EUFF) brings the best of contemporary European filmmaking to Canadians. Each of the 27 European Union member states contributes one film to the festival; this year, the Hungarian submission is the inspiring redemption drama Toxicoma (2021), directed by Gábor Herendi.

Hungarian actor Győző Szabó’s memoir is the basis for this battle-of-the-wills two-hander. After accepting treatment for his heroin addiction, Szabó meets Dr. Csernus, whose intense and unconventional approach to recovery stirs something in the once-rising star. The cast includes great actors: Áron Molnár, Barna Kelemen Bányai, and Orsolya Török-Illyés.

Mariana Hristova of Cineuropa has described Toxikoma as “a dark but smooth journey through personal crisis and behavioural patterns.” The movie screening will be at 7 pm on November24,  2022 at the Ottawa Art Gallery (English subtitles are available) with introductory remarks by H.E. Mária Vass-Salazar, Ambassador of Hungary.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A session, an exciting opportunity to interact with the Hungarian actor and producer, Győző Szabó.
