If you're a fan of Korean film, or just movies in general, you don't want to miss out on the Korean Cultural Centre Canada's monthly K-Cinema events! On the last Wednesday of every month the centre, located on the main floor of the gorgeous 150 Elgin building, hosts a free screening of a popular Korean movie.
April’s movie was the 2003 blockbuster The Classic, a drama-romance film about a young woman who discovers her mother's old journals which reveal a love story eerily similar to her own. The evening started out with a casual reception in the main hall of the centre, where guests were served an assortment of delicious Korean snacks such as Korean-style fried donuts and Choco-Pies. Staff couldn’t refill the platters fast enough, with the snacks disappearing in a blink of an eye.
After the reception, guests filed into the intimate theatre. The event proved to be popular as the audience packed into room–additional chairs had to be added to accommodate the large crowd. The audience responded enthusiastically to the movie, laughing at the funny parts and crying at the sad parts. It was heartwarming to see that movies in general, no matter the language or culture, have the power to bring people together through these shared emotions.
This month, in place of K-Cinema, the Korean Cultural Centre Canada will be hosting a special three-day event, the DMZ Docs Korean Film Festival, that you will not want to miss.
Three Korean documentaries will be screened on the evenings of May 31st, June 1st and June 2nd respectively. To RSVP for this event, or for more info about future K-Cinema nights, follow the Korean Cultural Centre Canada's Facebook page.
