As Covid-19 continues to affect the lives of many people across the world, The National Theatre School of Canada (NTS) launched an initiative to help support emerging artists who are facing increased financial struggles due to the virus.
“Artists help keep the social fabric alive, even from a physical distance. Their work is essential to bringing our communities together even in times of isolation,” says Gideon Arthurs, CEO of NTS,
575 Canadian artists have applied for the Art Apart project, where they will be given the chance to be granted $750 to help support them financially.
Eighty grants will be awarded to artists who have submitted projects from all areas and genres of theatre including; acting, directing, lighting design, production design, technical arts, playwriting, set, costume and sound design, as well as genres such as; performance, musical theatre, puppet theatre, clown, improv, devised theatre and monologue.
These young applicants come from various educational institutions across the country (such as National Theatre School of Canada, Concordia University, Ryerson, Sheridan College, University of Toronto, York University, University of British Columbia and many more). This great diversity of languages, cultural backgrounds, provinces, regions and fields of theatre studies will be reflected in the 80 selected works.
The works will be showcased throughout April and May on TheatreTraining.ca and on the National Theatre School's and the artists’ social networks through the hashtag #artapart.
