Violet, lilac, plum, grape, whatever you want, get it on for the Purple Tie Gala
Cornerstone Housing for Women is hosting their third annual Purple Tie Gala, presented by Livingston MacDonald Wealth Management, on October 2, 2021. Their most important fundraiser of the year, the event will be broadcasted virtually once again, so you can support the cause in the comfort of your own home.
When it all began in 1983, Ottawa’s first women-only shelter was simply three cots in the basement of All Saints Church in Sandy Hill. Cornerstone has expanded over the years and now provides shelter to 125 women.
With the onset of the pandemic in 2020, Ottawa has seen a 17 per cent rise in women experiencing homelessness. Despite the many challenges in the past year and a half, Cornerstone worked with The Shepherds of Good Hope to provide a large enough space for women to find shelter while keeping safe from the spread of the Coronavirus. Through their four residences, their emergency shelter, and outreach programs, Cornerstone strives to offer women assistance without judgement and with respect.
Last year’s first virtual gala sold out, raising $73,000 to help Cornerstone with the increasing expenses due to Covid-19. The funds also helped housing and support programs to help women get back on their feet.
“It was incredible to see the community come together to raise money for vulnerable women in Ottawa, amid the most challenging year,” says Sarah Davis, Cornerstone’s new executive director. “This past year has been like no other. Women needing shelter more than doubled, we had to move our shelter twice throughout this pandemic, and there was increased feelings of isolation and mental health challenges for women. We know hope, healing and more housing options are possible with your support.”
The virtual gala commences at 7 p.m. for an exciting night of gourmet treats, live entertainment from local artists, and a silent auction to bid the night away! Guests are encouraged to dress up and wear purple.
“Purple dresses, purple ties, purple hair, anything goes,” says Joseph Cull, Purple Tie Gala co-host and member of the gala planning committee. “We hope everyone will get together in their best purple attire, celebrate with their closest friends and family, share photos of themselves during the broadcast, and help Cornerstone bring in much needed funds to continue their incredible housing programs for vulnerable women in our city.”
The gala will be hosted as a live party on Rogers TV (Channel 22). Joseph Cull will be hosting alongside Cornerstone’s Sarah Davis. Tickets will be accompanied by a curated basket filled with local food and beverages delivered right to your doorstep.
Ottawa Life Magazine in partnership with Endy Mattresses, has generously donated eight twin size mattresses to Cornerstone and will be donating a Queen size mattress to the auction!
