Though we are all dreading the short days and cold nights that come along with the winter, the National Capital Region is host to many fun spots ideal for hitting up during the colder months. Whether you want to engage in some winter sports, take in some entertainment or enjoy a hot beverage or meal, there is a place for you.
The Canal
It goes without saying that the Rideau Canal is Ottawa’s, and one of Canada’s, most famous winter hot spot, with thousands of people coming from near and far to skate on the 7.8 km-long skateway every year. Whether you’re a skater or not, the Canal is a beautiful place to visit on a winter day to take in Ottawa’s beautiful scenery and enjoy some hot chocolate and a beaver tail with a date or friends.
A brand new Starbucks opened up on York Street in the Byward Market recently, just in time for the winter season. Though the capital is home to many Starbucks cafes, this specific location is one of the company’s new “Starbucks Evenings” concept stores. The location offers two floors of lounge and seating space with WiFi, an expanded menu of specialty hot beverages, hot food and, after 4 pm, a selection of wines and craft beers. A nice, cozy spot to chill on a snowy weekend.
Ottawa is home to many national museums, notably the Canadian Museum of History, the Canadian Museum of Nature and the National Gallery of Canada. Exploring a museum is a great family outing for those days that are too cold for outdoor activities, but you still want to get out of the house for a bit.
Parliament Hill
Parliament Hill is gorgeous all year round, but winter time is especially nice as it serves as the heart of the annual Christmas Lights Across Canada event. The event kicked off in early December with an opening ceremony which featured fireworks and live entertainment. Don’t forget New Year’s Eve this year on the hill, too!
